When I think of voice acting, I imagine it to be one of those industries where it’s incredibly difficult to know how to get started. Where I am, I don’t see any college courses or job postings for voice work. Therefore, I look at it as a mostly online market. And when a specific skill like voice acting is so heavily dependent on online bartering, I can already foresee many complications. This is why someone like Sara Secora providing a handbook is so important. It offers a cheat sheet for those with a desire to explore the world of voice acting. And the book is intended for those who want to be able to work from the comfort of their home.
The Anywhere Voice Actor features 6 Chapters that cover a lot of ground. It explains the many branches of voiceovers, when to send a demo, handling auditions, how to put together your home studio, the business of voice acting, promoting yourself on social media, and much more.
Chapter 5 focuses heavily on the psychology of having a voice acting career, encouraging you to take care of yourself inside and out. There’s even a section on vocal health that aspiring voice actors should pay attention to.
The introduction phase of the book acts as an exploration of Secora’s own experience. Going from recording on the floor of her closet to becoming a full-time professional. Today, Sara is also an independent casting director, and she teaches the art of voice acting on a more intimate level via SkillsHub.
One key thing I learned from this book is the importance of acting in voice acting. Many think that your physical appearance means nothing when it’s just your voice being captured. But when you put your entire body into the performance, it only enhances the voicework that much more. There are many other essential tips in this book, such as the importance of reading and learning the pronunciation of words.
There may not be many places to look if you want to find a direct pathway into the world of full-time voice acting, but The Anywhere Voice Actor aims to fill this void. It may very well be the Save The Cat of voice acting. When I search for voice acting books, I find Voice Acting for Dummies and a few other books that cover the basics on a micro-level. But The Anywhere Voice Actor isn’t just a reference book. You’ll come out of this book feeling enlightened, inspired, and most importantly, ready to explore your new career.
