Amazon is one of my favourtie tech companies in the world, and it’s for both their A+ customer service and their innovation in multiple industries. It’s been almost 5 years since the Kindle first disrupted the book market and became essentially the number one source of eBooks; and although people are going back to their beloved paperbacks now, the Kindle is still a platform you can’t ignore as a reader.
One of the new features Amazon is offering to its Prime subscribers is the ability to read a selection of books before they’re officially released. This is a genius way to give value to subscribers, and help the author get some extra exposure ahead of release.
I’ve found in the past few years that authors have begun listing their books on Amazon sometimes months ahead of release, and although the book isn’t always uploaded at the time, there are occaisions where a book is fully ready for publication and publishers just want to fit in a round of promotion before the release. This is why Kindle First is great, because it rewards subscribers and fans to be among the first to experience a book.
On top of this, it also helps you to discover new reads that you may have never encountered. In my case it was Harmony Black by Craig Schaefer. Currently the Kindle First lets you download only one of six books from a selection. What stood out to me first with Harmony Black was the book cover, the bright cover caught my attention (take note publishers) and made me skim through the synopsis of the book. Then once I knew it was something I would read I proceeded with the purchase.
I have yet to finish reading the book, but I am quite engrossed in it, and it’s even more enjoyable knowing how random the transaction was. This is what I always love about reading, the discoverability element, reading something you’ve never heard about and enjoying it. Kudos to Amazon for this wonderful idea.
